What I Have Learned
This entry may not come as a surprise, however, I learn so much by tutoring; I learn just by reading the content of many of the student's papers. This past week I have had extremely interesting topics that taught me a great deal. I have had papers on O'bama's Nobel Peace Prize, Vegetarianism, Global Warming, The Fall of the House of Usher and Doctor's Moral Code of Ethics. All of these topics dealt with things I knew little about and all held my interest. I am a vegetarian, yet i know little about the gory details of animal cruelty. I bonded with my tutee, who is a vegetarian, and helped him add details to his already extremely strong argument. I love that learning is happening from both ends because that is what we are here for after all.

That's a really good point, Katie. Today I learned that jaguars often hunt farm animals but many farmers aren't aware of it...and that people at Loyola stereotype cross country runners. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteIt seems like another aspect of being a community of writers and learners. We can help the tutees learn, but they have something to teach us too.
I LOVE TUTORING FOR THIS EXACT REASON! I have learned so much about all different things- namely politics and medical stuff.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, listening to you and your tutee debate about animal rights was fascinating. We always have such interesting discussions here! And they're always so relevant too- remember that 45 minute conversation we had last week on writing center pedagogy? I was so impressed with us, haha. ;) Monday nights! WOO!
amen. i really love monday nights with you angela. haha
