It looks like we're moving closer toward an end-of-semester event for Harrington School's first year students. I'm now in contact with a Residential Life staffer in Weldin Hall, where the Harrington living-learning community is located. Apparently, she has some resources to put on an event. So perhaps this could be some fun? I hope so.
Here's one idea I have been kicking around: a "write-a-thon." Everyone has trouble sitting down to draft papers and other assignments. So perhaps we could sponsor an event (with food) to get these students writing? After some opening remarks and some eating, we could set them to work, freewriting style. (Don't stop writing! If you have to stop, you must talk with a tutor!) Perhaps there could be prizes: for most words written, for most assignments fully drafted. It could be something like an athletic event for writers.

I like the idea of a write-a-thon. Are we mainly trying to get attention for the Writing Center with Harrington School students so that they will use the Writing Center? I like the athletic competition idea! I'd be tempted to participate as a writer...
ReplyDeleteIt sounds good. We could even expand the prizes to have categories like "most carefully crafted sentence," or something like that, so that we're promoting various skill sets as well. I don't know if I've got the same commitment to participating as Rose does, though. I must confess that, sadly, I am one of those cliche writers who needs isolation to maintain a train of thought. I don't know how productive I would be among a group of people, but I'd be happy to be one of the tutors or servers, delivering snacks to dedicated writers. :)
